Immunohistochemical Study of Benign Proliferative Lesion, Intraductal and Infiltrating Ductal Carcinoma of Breast

Abstract
In an attempt to identify immunohistochemical markers that make a differential point in the diagnosis of benign proliferative lesion and ductal carcinoma of breast, 60 cases (ductal or atypical ductal epithelial hyperplasia .(10), sclerosing adenosis (3), papilloma and papillomatosis (9), intraductal carcinoma (10), and infiltrating ductal carcinoma (28)) were studied. All cases with immunohistochemical stains for S-100 protein, carcinoembryonic antigen and estrogen receptor protein were analysed and ductal carcinoma cases correlated with histopathologic grade and axillary lymph node metastasis.
S-100 protein positive for cells that correspond to myoepithelial cells may serve as a useful marker(p<0.005) in the separation of benign proliferative lesions from intraductal or infiltrating ductal carcinomas. Carcinoembryonic antigen is also a useful marker(p < 0.005) to differ;-ntiate the benign conditions of breast from the malignant tumors. However, it has no prognostic significance in breast carcinomas. Immunohistochemical staining results for estrogen receptor protein in paraffin sections are not correlated with differen¢¥-tial diagnostic or prognostic significance in this study.
